Abstract
576,499. Composite fabric articles. TRUBENISED, Ltd., and BIHALY, L. Feb. 1, 1943, No. 1646. [Class 140] [Also in Group V] Shaped articles such as breast-cups for brassieres are made from fabric knitted from composite double strands consisting of separate strands lying alongside each other and knitted together simultaneously, one strand being of thermoplastic material such as cellulose acetate, and the other of non-thermoplastic material such as cotton, linen, viscose, or silk wool, the fabric so knitted being stretched out of its plane as by moulding, without the aid of heat, and set in stretched shape by treatment as with a solvent or softener to render the thermoplastic strands adhesive, followed by pressure, and heat if necessary, to fuse together in manner known per se the two kinds of strand where they cross. If the thermoplastic strand contains a plasticizer, the softener may be an agent, e.g., alcohol, acting on the plasticizer. The material may be shaped and set as a single layer; or it may form one layer of a two-ply material or the middle layer of a threeply material, the remaining layer or layers consisting of knitted or loosely-woven cotton, linen, viscose or like fabric capable of being stretched to the same degree as the layer of composite material; or two layers of the composite material may be joined together by fusion to form a twoply material. Fig. 2 shows in stretched condition a fabric knitted with double strands of which A is cellulose acetate and C is cotton, the crossings B' of the two lower rows being shown in their set condition after fusion. Moulding apparatus is described (see Group V) for shaping cups for brassieres; and a brassiere is described, built up as described in Specification 576,522, [Group VII], from cups so shaped from the aforesaid material.
