Abstract
576,465. Valves. BRIGGS MANUFACTURING CO., and GERNANDT, W. G. Oct. 12, 1944, No. 19709. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine in which a rotatable valve 26 has a combustion chamber 34 and a cooling chamber 56 therein, an expansion chamber 61 is provided for the coolant which may be metallic sodium. The chamber 61 is comprised by a hollow plug 58, having cooling fins 62. It is screwed on to the stem of the valve which is frusto-conical as shown. The valve rotates on bearing rings 32 of bronze or lead-bronze alloy in a head bolted to a water cooled member 29 into which the cylinder barrels, which are air cooled, are screwed. Each valve is driven from a shaft 47 through gears 46, 42, the latter being mounted in a bush 43 and driving the valve through splines 41, 39. A spring, cup-shaped washer 45, interposed between a nut 44 screwed on to the block 58 and a member 40, allows slight movement of the valve, and counteracts negative pressure during the suction stroke.
