Abstract
576,334. Glass batches. STEVENS, A. H. (Garco Products, Inc.). Nov. 30, 1943, No. 19987. [Class 56] In a process for preparing a nodulated glass batch a part of the insoluble material is powdered and added to the remainder of the batch containing the balance of the sand and other insoluble materials and soluble fluxes in the presence of sufficient water to obtain a coherent mix capable of nodulation. An example of a low alkali glass batch is as follows Sand 1000 parts by weight Boric Acid 900 " " " Magnesite 400 " " " Feldspar 375 " " " Fluorspar 140 " " " The magnesite powdered to pass 200 mesh may be mixed with the other constituents and 10 per cent to 20 per cent of water, by weight to give a coherent mix and then nodulated by tumbling in a rotary kiln. The batch may be slightly heated to, say, 150‹ C. before nodulation. The nodulated batch is easily melted and is of uniform composition.
