Abstract

576,077. Soot blowers. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., CLENCH, E. C. S., BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and HANDOLL, P. G. Jan. 7, 1944, Nos. 14133 (divided out of 576,072, [Group XXIX]), and 10141. [Class 99 (ii)] In a soot blower of the retractable type, the blower tube is reciprocated by a reciprocating motor and rotated in the advanced position by a rotary motor, the admission of cleaning fluid being controlled by a valve actuated by a cam 1 on the blower tube 2, The valve 6 which is off-set in the casing 3 from the blower tube, is actuated by a lever and tappet mechanism 18. 22, as described in Specification 567,166. Alternatively, the admission of cleaning fluid is controlled by valve mechanism asdescribed in Specification 532,692. The tube has a bearing 10 within the valve casing 3 to which is connected a casing 15 carrying the valve actuating means, a casing 31 carrying the rotary motor 38 and forming part of the gear box 37 which has a cover 47. The rotary and reciprocating motors, their transmitting mechanism and the blower tube may be removed as a unit. The motor 38 drives the blower tube through gearing 40-43, the gear wheel hub 44 being keyed to the blower tube to allow axial movement thereof. The hub 44 has a tubular cap 55 having a shank 56 extending throughthe gear case cover plate 58, a pointer 63 on the shank indicating the rotary position of the blower tube. The cylinder 64 of the reciprocating motor is hingedly mounted on a bracket; 68 on the gear case cover 47 and the piston 72 is connected to a lever 74 pivoted at 75 in the casing 31. A focked lever 76 mounted on the pivot 75 has trunnions engaging a saddle piece 81 mounted between flanges 87 of a sheave 82 secured to the blower tube. The casing 31 is connected by bolts to the casing 15 so that the motor 38 may be arranged in four different angular positions relative thereto Two hydraulic motors may be employed, or an electric rotary motor and a pneumatic reciprocating motor may be used. The motors may be manually controlled or may be automatically controlled as described in Specification 576,072.
