Abstract
575,556. Riveting. KLOPSTOCK, H., BERNFELD, E., and FRICTIONAL HEAT, Ltd. March 23, 1944, No. 5424. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Sets and snaps.-In riveting the rivets are raised to the temperature required for upsetting the head by applied friction. A rivet R to be upset is held by pressure applied to the head H or by a chuck or like means gripping the head. The snap T is attached to a spindle S with an interposed asbestos &c. washer J and is rotated at high speed whilst pressed against the end of the rivet. The snap is made of manganese or vanadium steel, tungsten carbide or one of the high cobalt alloys. Cooling fins may be provided on the spindle and/or the snap and may be associated with an air blast internally or externally applied. The hole in the plate P<1> is preferably countersunk and the rivet may be rotated in the opposite direction to the spindle to weld it wholly or in part to the plates.
