Abstract

575,511. Current and voltage measuring apparatus ; non-metal resistances. MARCONI INSTRUMENTS, Ltd., and HUNT, E. W. Feb. 1, 1944, No. 1869. [Class 37] A resistive termination for a coaxial transmission line includes a centrally apertured carbon disc, of which the outer periphery makes contact with an extension of the outer conductor of the transmission line and the periphery of the central aperture makes contact with an extension of the inner conductor. An outer conductive tubular member 7 is internally threaded at both ends and provided with an abutment 8. Into one end is screwed a tubular member 3 having an internal diameter equal to the internal diameter of the transmission line. Coaxially supported by insulating material 9 is an inner conductor 4 having an external diameter equal to that of the inner conductor of the transmission line. The terminating resistor comprises a carbon disc 1 with a central aperture, the outer and inner cylindrical surfaces c, d and adjacent rings a, b on both flat faces being metallised. The disc is threaded on the conductor 4 so that the metallised surface d makes contact therewith. The member 3, conductor 4 and disc 1 are then screwed into the member 7 so that connection is made between the metallised surfaces a, c continuously around the disc, with the members 3, 7. A crystal rectifier 2 is connected to the conductor 4 by a plug and socket 10. Screwed into the right-hand end of the member 7 is a conductive plug 11 having a coaxial bore through which passes an insulated shank 12 having an inner terminal 6 for connection to the other end of the crystal rectifier 2. The outer face of the terminal 6 and the inner end of the plug 11 are insulated from each other by a disc 5 of mica and form a by-pass condenser for high-frequency energy. Between the shank 12 and the outer member 7 is connected a micro-ammeter which measures the voltage drop across the resistor 1. The resistor 1 may be made by drilling through the centre of a carbon resistor of 2-watt rating (e.g., Erie R.M.A.1.) nominal value 400-1,000 ohms and parting off a section # in. wide. The entire surface is then electroplated with copper and a ring of the deposited copper is removed from each end surface until the resistance from the centre to the outer edge is of the required value. The completed section is then impregnated with wax. Specification 556,726 is referred to.
