Abstract
575,454. Sorting washers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and BISHOP, H. S. Jan. 27, 1944, No. 1541. [Class 117] A device for sorting washers &c. according to thickness comprises an inclined flat glass plate 14 and inclined bars 18, 19 also of glass spaced from the surface of the plate at progressively diminishing distances. Guide plates 20 and 22 direct the washers passing through the spaces between the bars and the plates to the head of the succeeding bar or to a shoot 45 leading to a collecting bin. The washers that do not pass are discharged by shoots 26, 29 at the ends of the respective bars. The spaces may increase in width towards the lower edge of each bar, and also along the length of the bar from the upper to the lower end. Jogging movement may be imparted to the plate by an electromagnetically driven pusher in association with a return spring 23 and buffer 17. A feed hopper 24 may be carried by the spring and share in the movement of the plate. In an alternative arrangement the plate is stationary and a reciprocating blade works in the space under the bars to clear washers that fail to pass completely. Another washer feeding device consists of a hopper from which the washers drop onto a pair of felted rolls rotating in opposition to the downward movement of the washers. The 'hopper is replenished from a spring suspended container by a bucket conveyor.
