Abstract
575,224. Stud - and - socket fastenings. HITCHINS, W. G. March 8, 1944, No. 4312. [Class 44] A stud-and-socket fastening which allows limited latitude as regards the extent to which the stud must be inserted in the socket comprises an inclined pocket in the socket, or, as shown at 3, in the stud 1, the socket housing a ball 4 loaded by spring 6, the mouth of the pocket being restricted so that the ball normally projects therefrom but cannot escape when the stud is removed from the socket. The ball co-operates with the inclined surface of the pocket to allow free insertion of stud in socket to the desired extent, but prevent removal of the stud by wedging action. Release is effected by rotating the stud to register the ball with a longitudinal groove 5, the stud being then freely removable from the socket. In addition to being inclined to the axis, the pocket may be inclined in a helical sense as seen in Fig. 2, the ball then acting to prevent rotation of the stud in one direction but allow free rotation in the other direction. The fastening is applicable generally but is shown as for securing together two apertured plate members, the stud with countersunk head having screwdriver slot .7 being rotatably mounted in one plate, the socket 2 being secured to the other plate. An ejector spring, not shown, may be provided under the head of the stud, and the head may have an arrow or other mark to register with a mark on the plate to indicate the condition of the fastening.
