Abstract

575,211. Hammers; handles. STEPHENS, W. R., and STEVENS BELTING CO., Ltd., [trading as THOR HAMMER CO.]. March 6, 1944, No. 4137. [Classes 61 (i) and 61 (ii)] A hand hammer of the type having a metal head in which one or each end is provided with a softer striking piece, has the head divided into two or more parts forming sockets for the striking pieces and clamping them into position. As shown, the head consists of two similar members a<1>, a<2> forming a hole c, having spikes h, to receive the handle and a socket d at each end, having ridges g to receive a striking piece e. The two halves clamp the striking pieces, which are secured by screws f and the handle secured by screws i. In a modification, one of the screws i has a gripping piece, which may be formed integrally with it, accommodated in a recess formed at one side of the hole c. In another modification, the handle has a bulge engaging in an annular recess. Alternatively, an annular recess may be provided with a contractible bush to engage the handle. In another modification, clamping action is obtained on each striking piece by means of separate parts secured by the screws f to the main part of the head.
