Abstract
574,237. Electron multipliers. CINEMA-TELEVISION, Ltd., and SOMMER, A. Jan. 19, 1944, No. 1058. [Class 39 (i)] In the manufacture of electron multipliers, in which the electrodes are sensitized by distillation thereon of an alkali metal, a getter is provided which absorbs substantially all metal distilled in excess of the optimum quantity. Antimony is the preferred metal, especially with electrodes of rubidium on silver oxide ; lead oxide is unsuitable. In an example silver electrodes are baked at 450‹ C. for two hours and then oxidized. Alkali metal is distilled at 180‹ C. in the presence of a pellet of antimony. After distillation is stopped baking is continued at 200‹ C. for 15 minutes. The pellet may be secured to a wire as in Specification 543,877 and the multiplier may be of the type described in Specification 471,800.
