Abstract
563,234. Making grid electrodes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 26, 1943, No. 3163. Convention date, April 7, 1942. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] . Welding; knurling.-A grid electrode for an electric - discharge device is made by embossing the surface of the support wire with a number of parallel closelyspaced, and preferably longitudinal, grooves with intermediate ridges tapering to knife edges, placing the grid wire in contact with the knife edged parts, passing a welding current between the parts and pressing them into engagement with each other to complete the weld. By grooving the large diameter support wire an excessive heating of the relatively small grid wire during welding is prevented while obtaining an effective weld. The support wires and preferably also the grid wires may be made of a metal of high melting point, such as molybdenum, tungsten or nickel. The support wires 2 are provided with grooves with knife-edged ridges 14, the spacing between which is small relatively to the diameter of the grid wire 3, by passing them between a pair of hand-driven grooved rollers in one of which the groove is provided with a number of V-shaped cutting edges 12. The grid wire is wound round a pair of support wires and welded thereto at the points of junction by electrodes 17, 18 connected to the terminals of a source of current S through a resistance 19 and switch 16. As soon as the parts are softened by bringing to welding temperature pressure is applied to the electrode 17 to effect the weld.
