Abstract
563,208. Valves. CHUBB, D. S. Oct. 31, 1942, No. 12672/41. [Class 135] A diaphragm-actuated regulating valve particularly applicable for use with face masks, helmets, &c., which are used in'deep sea diving equipment, submarine escape apparatus and protective head gear for working in gas, smoke, rarefied atmosphere, &c., has a fluid pressure loading chamber N on one side of the diaphragm K divided into two parts by a leaky piston C operatively connected to the diaphragm to damp its movement. In the form shown in the Figure, a needle valve G with double opposite tapers co-operates with a restricted orifice in a member F adjustably screwed in the outlet connection and secured by a lock nut M. The needle is secured by a set-screw H in a spindle E having a screwed part adapted to engage piston C and so clamp. backing and stop plates C<1>, D on opposite sides of the diaphragm K which.is made of rubber or copper beryllium alloy and is subject to inlet pressure. The capacity of the loading chamber may be adjusted by a screwed plug A and shims B. The piston C may be fluted peripherally or provided with one or more leakage passages.
