563,198. Bending wood. GRAMELSPACHER, C. U. Feb. 2, 1943, No. 1736. [Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A method of shaping a number of flexible sheets of wood into an article, such as a cabinet or a part of an aeroplane, consists in applying adhesive to the sheets, arranging the sheets in contact with one another in a hollow mould, and exerting pressure on the sheets to press them together and to force them into conformity with the mould. Preferably, the pressure is applied by inflating a flexible bag within the space enclosed by the sheets, and is maintained for a time sufficient to allow the adhesive to set, the sheets being heated to expedite the setting. The mould comprises a base 1, a vertical back wall 2, side walls 4 hinged to the back wall, a hinged cover, and a front wall 6 slidably mounted on the base and movable to and from the rear wall by a rotatable cam 19. Channels 11 are formed within the walls for the circulation of steam or other heating fluid. Centrally disposed between the walls is an expansible bag 30, of rubber or the like, with an inlet 31 extending downwards through the base 1. The bag has walls of varying thickness, according to the shape of the article to be made, to secure even pressure on the walls of the article. In use, sheets 40 of veneer are coated with adhesive and are assembled face to face in the mould, as shown. The mould is then closed and locked and the bag 30 inflated to press the sheets against the walls of the mould and hold them in place while the adhesive sets under the heat from the steam circulating through the channels 11. A flexible metal sheet may be interposed between the bag and the veneers to transmit the pressure. If desired, a thin flexible electric heating element may be used around the bag to transmit the pressure and apply heat to the veneers. A layer of cloth, asbestos, metal foil, or the like may be used in addition to, or in place of, one of the sheets of wood.
