Abstract
562,934. Obtaining coherent masses from powdered materials. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 13, 1943, No. 4109. Convention date, April 30, 1942. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Groups V and XXII] Porous plates are produced by sintering metal powders, the sinteripg being effected in a mould in which the powder is loosely packed by centrifugal force. As applied to the production of a circular plate of corrugated form in crosssection for use as a filtering element, a two-part mould 28, 30 interfitting at 32 and, if desired, further registered by dowels 33 is mounted for rotation by an electric motor 40, powder being supplied at 34 from a funnel 42. Speeds of from 100 to 1750 r.p.m. are suitable. Higher speeds of the order of 10,000 r.p.m. may be adopted to yield plates when porosity gradually increases towards the centre and flat discs may be made. The mould may be made from graphite, oxidised chrome steel, or from steel dusted with powdered graphite or alundum. The mould may be subjected to axial vibration to assist in distributing the powder, and the vibration may be produced by a solenoid or by a cam.
