Abstract

561,489. Composite wood blocks. BAYON, H. P. Nov. 3, 1942, No. 15493, [Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Group V] Waste wood is charged at a into a drier b and is conveyed by paddles d into a heated mixer f where it is sprayed with liquid phenolic impregnant such as cresylic acid, creosote or a tar acid. The mixture is then conveyed slowly forward by a worm n through a heated cylinder m and discharged on to a conveyer belt t where it is rolled into sheet form. The sheet is fed into travelling heated moulds y and is cut into lengths by a knife w. Covers y<1> are placed on the material in the moulds and gradually forced down by rollers' z. The mould assembles are then stacked in a press x, where they are pressed with heat. The mixture may contain also (a) artificial resin condensates, e.g. #-stage cresylic-aldehyde condensate, and natural resins; (b) flame resistant materials such as silicates, powdered slate and barium sulphate; and (c) granulated glass or asbestos powder which make the product heat-resistant and impart to it a non-wetting surface. Mineral matter may be spread over the surface of the sheets in the moulds before the covers y<1> are applied.
