Abstract
560,574. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 31, 1942, No. 10763. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] In order to increase the intensity of resonant radiation from a positive column electric discharge device, such as a fluorescent lamp 10, a series of spaced baffles 1-3, for trapping positive ions, is arranged in the discharge path between the electrodes 11. The baffles, which have a thickness of the same order as the mean free path of the electrons in the discharge, may be of metal, preferably with an insulating coating, or of insulating material, and are supported by a rod 15 fixed between the closed ends of the envelope of the device. As shown, the baffles are in the form of discs of smaller diameter than that of the envelope of the lamp so that the discharge can pass the edges of discs, but in modified constructions the discs fit the internal wall of the envelope and are either perforated or formed of wire gauze, so that the discharge can pass through them. The inner wall of the envelope, as well as the baffles and rod 15, may be coated with fluorescent material.
