Abstract

569,107. Slat &c. fabrics. IONIDES, P. D., and McGILL, E. M. April 28, 1943, No. 6711. [Class 45] [Also in Group X] Roadways, runways and the like are formed by superimposing on the ground a transverse grid of flexible elements and a waterproof or substantially waterproof sheet of fibrous material such as fabric. In Fig. 5, a runway comprises upper and lower sheets 2, 1 of one or more layers of proofed fabric such as hessian impregnated with creosote and coated with a bituminous or tarry substance, and an intermediate grid of transversely extending flexible metallic elements 3, the sheets being bonded together and to the elements 3 by the bituminous &c. substance ; each sheet is formed of a number of strips similarly bonded where they overlap. In Fig. 4, the strips 3 are interlaced with and secured to longitudinal'steel strips 4 to form a lattice network, such network may be formed in panels, Fig. 2, in which the outer strips 3<1>, 3<11>, 4<1>, 4<11> are thicker than the remaining strips, and the strips 3, 4 extend beyond the outer strips 3<11>. 4<11>, so that they may be bent over to embrace the outer strips 3<1>, 4<1> of adjacent panels, the bent-over ends being then engaged by slidable steel loops 12 ; the strips 3 arc bent laterally adjacent the outer strips 4<1> to permit such a connection. Panels in adjacent rows are arranged to break joint. In each panel, the outer strips are fully welded together, the strips 3, 4 are fully welded to the outer strips 3<1>, 4<1> and spot-welded to the outer strips 3<11>, 4<11>, all the strips 3 are spotwelded to the fourth strip 4 from the outer strip 4', and elsewhere the strips 3 are spotwelded to the strips 4 at alternate crossings and in staggered rows. After laying, pickets may be driven into the ground adjacent the outer frame members 4<1>, 4<11> of a runway to maintain the panel members under tension ; the sheets of Fabric may be similarly pegged to the ground. A waterproof apron of fabric may be secured along each edge of the runway to maintain stability of the ground. Specification 558,162, [Group X], is referred to.
