Abstract
568,553. Ice - making. BRITISHTHOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 4, 1943, No. 16216. Convention date, Oct. 5, 1942. [Class 29] [Also in Group I] The solvent component of a solution is obtained in a substantially pure form by means of a freezing chamber having a smooth domeshaped surface with dependent vertical sides, the solution being forced as a jet against the upper (dome) part of such surface and draining away uniformly over such surface and the surface being maintained at an ice-forming temperature. The jet velocity should be sufficiently high to prevent exclusion of the solute in the frozen solvent component. The invention can be used for the purification of sea water and for the concentration of fruit juices or milk by the removal of water. As shown, a dome piece 31 is housed in a heatinsulated chamber 32 having salt water and purified water compartments 38, 51, from the former of which salt water is drawn by a pump 42 for delivery by a nozzle 49 directing the salt water upwardly against the top of the dome piece 31. A refrigeration compressor 34 and condenser 35 supply a refrigerating coil 33 around the dome, whereby the solvent component is frozen on to the interior of the dome piece 31 and continuously washed by the salt water to prevent any salt being occluded in the ice so formed ; the wash returns to the salt water compartment 38. A timing switch device 53, slowly rotated by a single-phase synchronous motor 57 periodically cuts out the pump motor 43 &c. refrigeration motor 36 and inserts a heating coil 52 for the dome piece, whereby the block of ice is released to fall on a grid 61 and so passes to the pure water compartment 51. Operation of the apparatus is stopped when either a switch 66 is opened by a float 64 or a switch 68 is operated by a swinging entrance flap 62 to the pure water compartment 51 being held open by blocks of ice. A domestic refrigerator may be adapted for the purpose by providing a dome piece to be attached to the unused evaporator unit, e.g. by spring clips and by freezing of water, and a liquid tank with pump and spraying nozzle, Fig. 1 (not shown).
