[Class 4] The static line controlling the pack-retaining means of a container dropped from aircraft is guided by a fairlead 36, carried by a flexible member'secured to the load and detachably secured to the pack, so that a straight pull is exerted on the retaining means. The cover flaps 18 of the parachute pack are overlapped at the centre and retained by a flexible wire loop 19 passed through the eyelet 20 of the uppermost flap and through loops 23, 24 attached to the lowermost flap and threaded through the eyelet 20. The loop 19 is connected to a member 21 having a rigid guide loop 22, and elastic cables 41 connect the member 21 to a webbing 38 which carries the fairlead 36. The webbing 38 passes through a hole 15 inthe upper open end 12 of the rigid container and has a wire frame 39 threaded over one of the lift webs 14 of the parachute. The loop 19 is retained by a pin connected to an extension 35 of the static line, or, as shown in Fig. 5, it is retained by a bolt 29 of a delay action device 28, the bolt having a series of holes 33 engageable by a pin 34 connected to the extension 35. The hole selected determines the time interval between the withdrawal of the pin and the retraction of the bolt to release the parachute. The device 28 is retained in position on the pack by a web 48 looped over the opposite lift web and adjustable to tighten the base-plate 27 against the loops 23, 24 which pass through a hole 26 in the base-plate.
