[Class 83 (iv)] Formers.-A tool for press bending round or angular tubes or rods consists of a main part having a bending former, a clamp for holding the tube &c. at the point of maximum curvature and at least one swinging bending arm pivoted adjacent the clamp and engaged by a depending round-ended member movable in guides in the main part. The main part 1, which is placed on the bed of a press, is recessed to receive a former 2 and guide blocks 14, 15, 16, 17. The tube &c. 5 is clamped on the former by a wedge 4 projecting through a slot 3 in the part 1, the wedge engaging the tube &c. directly or through a slide. The wedge may be provided with an enlargement at its smaller end so as to prevent separation from the slot, or a pair of wedges 4, 4<1> may be used, the wedge 4 preferably having a plate 4<2> at its enlarged end and a locating plate 43 at its opposite end. On the face of the former is provided a clamping plate 6 which is slotted so that it may be slid up to bridge the gap between the wedge and the surface of the former before or after the tube &c. is clamped by the wedge and is then secured by bolts 7. Mounted on pivots 9<1>, 101 adjacent the clamp are a pair of bending arms 9, 10, which are moved on their pivots against the action of springs 18, 19 by the rounded ends of members 11, 12 on a spring-returned bridge-piece 13 which is operated by the press ram. The blocks 14, 15 a serve as guides for the members 11, 12 and the bending arms 9, 10, and the blocks 16, 17 act as further guides for the arms 9, 10. The operative faces of the bending arms may be straight or curved to correspond with the shape of the former. The assembly may be constructed so as to be locked in its closed position, so that it may be turned over to permit of the introduction of another shaping member between the arms 9, 10 and the former to bend the tube &c. in another plane, as described in Specification 549,280.
