Abstract
567,856. Stuffing - box substitutes. SIMPLEX PRODUCTS CORPORATION. July 16, 1943, No. 11595. Convention date, Sept. 28, 1942. [Class 122 (v)] A device for sealing the space between a shaft and its housing comprises a resilient ring 20 of steel &c. sealingly engaging the cylindrical surface of one member and pressed axially by fluid pressure to engage a floating ring 14 of bronze &c. which is thereby pressed against a shoulder 16 on the other member. Preferably, two non-rotatable resilient steel rings 20, 21 and two floating rings 14, 15 are carried in a groove 13 in the shaft or a sleeve carried thereby, so that a seal against fluid pressure acting in either direction is obtained. In a modification, a spring ring is interposed between the rings 20, 21 to press them axially in opposite directions. The rings may be supported in a groove in the housing, the steel rings then resiliently clasping the shaft. All the rings may be split and the bronze rings may be silver plated. U.S.A.
