Abstract
567,589. Stretching. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and WUTSCHER, T. Aug. 13, 1943, No. 13112. [Class 83 (iv)] A machine for stretching, and thereby straightening, strip has a gripper head 2 movable along a bed by a chain drive 4 for unwinding the strip S from a reel 9, the strip then being pulled by a gripper head 1, actuated by a hydraulically-operated ram, whilst the head 2 remains stationary. The chain drive 4 may consist of a chain at each side of the bed and transverse bars 10 are secured between the parts of the chains which follow the head 2 so as to travel at the same speed as the strip S and support it without causing scratching or other damage, or if one chain only is used, the bars 10 project on each side of it. The bars 10 may be replaced by rollers loosely journalled on the connecting pins of the chains or by one or more conveyer bands and may be covered with soft material such as felt. The strip S is supported adjacent the head 1 by an apron 11 and the chains 4 are driven by a sprocket 5 rotated from an electric motor through reduction gearing. The supports 10 may also be used on a draw bench operating on shorter strips.
