Abstract

567,118. Valves. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and BOLES, A. S. June 29, 1943, No. 10481. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXVI] A pressure - reducing device, particularly applicable for use in a fluid heater cleaner system, comprises a movable throttling device housed in an annular member adapted to be clamped between two pipe flanges and operatively connected with an adjusting spindle operable from outside the annular member together with means adapted when operatively positioned both to prevent leakage between the spindle and annular member and to lock the spindle in its adjusted position. As shown in the Figure, the device comprises a flat annulus 1 adapted to be clamped between flanges on adjacent pipe sections within the ring of bolts 4 clamping the two flanges together. A butterfly valve 23 arranged in a bore in the annulus is carried by a spindle 12 reduced at one end to enter a bush 11 and at the other end passing through a radial bore in the annulus to the outside of thereof. Leakage past the valve. spindle is prevented and the valve held in its adjusted position by a metallic sleeve 19, one end of which is pressed by a screwed sleeve 20 into a flared recess in the casing to cause a cutting edge on the end of the sleeve 19 to bite into the spindle. The outer end of the sleeve 19 is formed with a flange having a bevelled surface adapted to coact with a similar bevel on the end of the sleeve 20. The end of the valve spindle is formed with a square socket to receive an actuating key and with a notch to show the position of the valve. According to the Provisional Specification, the bolts 4 may pass through holes in the annulus and the valve member proper may be riveted in a longitudinal slot in its spindle.
