Abstract

566,853. Casting concrete walls &c. in situ. OLDREIVE, P. N., and PEARSON, H. L. Feb. 11, 1943, No. 2294. [Class 20 (ii)] A system of shuttering for casting walls, chimneys, &c. in situ comprises spaced sectional uprights on each side of the wall &c. adapted to be releasably secured to the cast wall so that the lowest sections may be removed and superposed on the upper sections, and shuttering panels adapted to " climb " on the uprights on each side and to be secured at various heights to the uprights while the concrete is cast. -The panels have means for effecting positive lateral movement of the panels into and out of a position in which the operative face of each panel is aligned with the operative faces of adjacent uprights. The uprights 6, 7 of channel section in comparatively short lengths, the lowermost of which are of unequal length to facilitate addition of superposed sections, are secured back to back in pairs coupled by ties 3 of fixed or adjustable length, the uprights on each side of the wall &c. being connected by stringers 10. Bolts 8 with nuts 9 pass through the uprights and project well into the casting space, so that after the concrete has set, the bolts 8 may be removed leaving the nuts firmly secured in the structure, after which the uprights may be positioned at a higher level and secured by the bolts 8 screwed into the embedded nuts 9, in readiness for further casting. The shuttering panels may comprise a metal sheet 21 of sufficient length to span the distance between uprights and welded or flush riveted to edge angle-sections 22, the side sections engaging in the channels of the uprights and carrying cams 23 which are rotatable by handles 24 to engage either of the inner faces of the channels of the uprights, so that the panel may be positively moved either into or out of operative position. In a modification, the cams are replaced by screws 25, Fig. 15, working in nuts 26 fixed by sections 27, 28 secured to the side angle-sections 22 of the panels, the head or point of the bolt being moved to bear against the neighbouring flange of the channel of the upright to effect the required lateral movement of the panel from or to operative position. The shutters may have pivoted safety pawls 29, Fig. 3, permitting free upward movement of the panels, but engaging the next lower bolts 8 should the panel begin to fall. According to a modification, the shutters may comprise two parts 39, 40, Fig. 7, with anglesection edges, the upper and lower of which on the two parts interengage and are secured by bolts 45 in slots therethrough, after the parts have been adjusted by right- and left-hand screws 43, 44 to form a panel of the required size. The angle sections may be replaced by channels, the flanges of the upper and lower channels of one part being removed for part of their length so that the webs thus left may engage within the edge channels of the other part. Lifting tackle for the shutters may be provided on the uprights. The uprights, if kept well in advance of the shuttering, may be used to support reinforcement, such as a steel network in the structure, or for the attachment of a light derrick for hoisting concrete &c. or for supporting a platform for workmen. The system of shuttering is stated to be equally applicable to three methods of advancing the shutters, namely (a) the "sliding" system in which the shuttering is advanced continuously or at frequent intervals, while concrete is placed continuously ; (b) the' " climbing " system in which the upward move of a horizontal row of shutters is intermittent and alternates with the placing of fresh concrete ; and (c) the " leapfrog system in which two or more horizontal rows of shutters are superimposed and the shutters of the lower row are removed at intervals and re-fixed above the upper row, thereby permitting continuous casting.
