Abstract
566,510. Concrete beams ; floors &c. SHARP, A. April 17, 1943, Nos. 6196 and 8250. [Class 20 (iv)] A reinforced-concrete beam for use in the construction of fireproof floors, roofs, walls and the like, is of channel section and has the face of its web 10 shouldered longitudinally to form longitudinal recesses at the corners of the web, with which recesses the edges of the flanges of an adjacent beam may engage. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the flanges of the beam are braced at intervals by reinforced webs 13, the reinforcements of which are connected to longitudinal reinforcing rods 12. When used for constructing walls, each beam is laid horizontally with the outer faces 131 of webs 13 'resting on the outer face of the web 10 of an adjacent beam. A continuous cavity throughout the wall is obtained by making spaced apertures in the webs, and adjacent beams may be bound together by cement mortar disposed between V-grooves 132 in the webs 13 and the webs 10. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the upper flange of a floor beam is shorter than the lower flange and the cavities thus formed between adjacent beams are filled with concrete. In Fig. 5, the two channel - section beams have interengaging flanges, those of one beam having rounded beads 112 and those of the other corresponding recesses 111. The webs 10 of the end beam are engaged by the flanges of a beam 22 and the floor is continued by further beams having recessed flanges. The beams may be shaped to provide apertures 24 through which concrete or cement may be housed to fill the cavities 25. The first Provisional Specification also describes a floor construction in which recesses are made in the longitudinal edges into which grouting material is poured, and also a construction in which the upper faces of the beams are recessed so that a pair of spaced parallel beams may accommodate a bridging slab laid in the opposed recesses. A modified beam construction comprises an upper flange extending in one direction from a web and a lower flange extending in the opposite direction, the top of the web being recessed to receive the bead or rib on the edge of the adjacent beam.
