Abstract
Castor oil is reacted with at least six molecular proportions of methanol or at least 7.5 molecular proportions of another monohydric alcohol in the presence of an alkali-metal alkoxide. In this way, the maximum amount of glycerine is separated. Further quantities of glycerine are obtained (a) by washing with water; (b) by repeatedly reacting with more alcohol and catalyst; (c) by reacting with more alcohol and catalyst and driving off the excess alcohol after neutralization. The use of the following alcohols is mentioned: ethanol, isopropanol, butanols, pentanols, octanols, alkoxyalkanols, allylalcohol and benzyl alcohol. Specification 543,604 is referred to.
