Abstract
565,100. stuffing-boxes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and BROCK, W. H. J. March 20, 1943, No. 4571. [Class 122 (v)] [Also in Group XXII] Relates to the fixing of transverse partitions in cylindrical bores and consists in expanding a flange originally parallel to the axis into a groove in the wall of the bore. The expansion may be effected by inserting and flatten- 'ing a dished washer which may remain in the partition member to reinforce the flange. As applied to sealing the driving shaft 15, Fig. 1, in a pump casing the groove 21 is of V-shape with its walls at right angles, one wall 22 being inclined to the axis at an angle greater than 60 degrees. The member 18 with its flange 20 originally parallel to the axis is inserted to abut the outer race 12 of the ball bearing being recessed to clear the inner race. A peripheral groove contains a roller &c. packing ring 25 and the flange is upset to the position shown in which the .wall 22 forms an efficient abutment preventing removal of the member. A recessed packing washer 16 is fitted to form a seal round the shaft. A gland packing 52, Fig. 6, for a piston-rod may be secured by a flanged member 53 expanded by flattening a dished washer 56 which may be resilient to resume its dished position, on removal of the flattening punch 57, and facilitate removal.
