Abstract

The resistance to attack by boiling water or hot dilute acid of artificial threads having a basis of casein or other protein is improved by treating them with an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde and from 350 grams to 750 grams of sulphuric acid per litre of solution. Sodium sulphate may be added to the treating bath in an amount considerably less than that necessary to react with all the sulphuric acid in the bath with the formation of sodium bisulphate. The protein of which the threads are made may be derived from milk, soya beans, or pea-nuts. The treatment may be carried out at room temperature or at lower or higher temperatures, but the concentration of sulphuric acid should preferably not exceed 600 grams per litre, i.e. about 45 per cent by weight, when the treatment is effected at room temperature or above. In an example, a solution of casein in dilute caustic soda is extruded into an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid and sodium sulphate. The threads so formed are passed through sodium chloride solution, then through a solution of sodium chloride and aluminium sulphate, and are then given a preliminary hardening with a solution of sodium sulphate and formaldehyde. They are then treated with a solution containing 400 grams of sulphuric acid, 300 grams of sodium sulphate and 40 grams of formaldehyde per litre. The hardening treatment may be carried out after cutting the threads into staple fibres. Specifications 512,640 and 549,642 are referred to.
