Abstract

564,392. Gun mountings for aircraft. PRESTON, J. DE LA P.-B., GREEN, J., and BAIGENT, G. M. Feb. 13, 1943, No. 2430. [Class 92 (i)] A gun mounting for small calibre guns and particularly for those used on aircraft, comprises a pivot member 11, a second pivot member 15 mounted eccentrically thereon, means 17 on pivot member 15 for supporting a gun 18 or guns in such manner as to have a degree of angular movement in both a horizontal and vertical plane, and means for constraining the gunsupporting means 17 to rotate about member 15 in the opposite sense to the rotation of the latter about the pivot member 11. In one construction, Fig. 1, the gun 18 is mounted on an arm 16 which carries the pivot 15 extending through a second arm 13. The latter rotates about pivot 11 extending from a fixed baseplate 10. The pivot 15 carries a sprocket 19 around which passes a chain 20 which is fixed at 21 to the mounting. By this means the sprocket 19 and hence the arm 16 are caused to rotate when the arm 13 is rotated about the pivot 11. In a modification, the chain and sprocket are replaced by a train of gears, one of which is fixed concentrically with pivot 11 and another is fitted to pivot 15, and in another modification links are employed to produce the required movement of the arm 16. According to a further modification, the arm 16 is extended beyond its pivot and has a downward extension engaging in a curved cam track. The arms may be locked in required positions by a pin on the boss 12 of arm 11, the pin being adapted to engage any one of a series of slots or holes in a fixed part of the mounting. The locking means may be operated by a Bowden wire or it may be controlled by a solenoid in circuit with a push button near the control handles. The gun-supporting means may be mounted on a pillar arranged to move vertically in relation to the arm 16 under the influence of a cam, for example, a cam track located between the arms. As shown in plan in Fig. 3, the gun mounting may be hinged at 34 on a base 31 so that it may be stored when not in use, a projection 32 being fitted to the boss 12 to engage with spaced guiding members 33 which prevent the mounting from moving about the hinge except when the projection lies opposite the gap 35 between them. Specification 541,849, [Group XX], is referred to.
