Abstract

552,036. Pantothenic acid. HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO. AKT.-GES., F. Oct. 29, 1941, No. 13918. Convention date, Jan. 17. Sample furnished. [Class 2 (iii)] Sodium-d-pantothenate is prepared in crystalline form by a process which comprises condensing #-alanine with d-(-)-α-hydroxy-##- dimethyl-y-butyrolactone in the presence of the equivalent molecular quantity of a solution of sodium in alcohol, and then slowly adding at a low temperature a solvent such as ether in which sodium-d-pantothenate is insoluble. In an example #-alanine is dissolved with gentle heating in sodium methylate solution and d(-)-α-hydroxy-##-dimethyl-y-butyrolactone is added at 30‹C. On careful addition of ether, the sodium-d-pantothenate crystallizes out. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of crystalline sodium d-pantothenate prepared by adding #-alanine to a solution of sodium in ethyl alcohol, followed by d(-)-α- hydroxY-##-dimethyl-γ-butyrolactone and then after 2 days by the slow addition of ether.
