Abstract
550,813. Forging socketed articles. FORRESTER, H. J. C. (Parker-Kalon Corporation). Aug. 27. 1941, No. 10908. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Socketed articles such as screws and plugs are produced from wire stock cut to length and transferred by the cut-off mechanism into position in front of a heading die into which it is pushed by a first heading punch which abuts the end and forms a conical socket therein. A second punch then comes into operation to push the blank into a parallel part of the die closing it round the punch to finish form the interior of the socket at the same time as the exterior is brought to shape. The blank is supported by a knockout pin and mechanism is provided to enable this pin to take up two abutment positions ; the mechanism being in the form of an attachment to existing heading machines. In the manufacture of grubscrews in a two stroke heading-machine, the cut off strip is pushed through a guide plate 15 into a die 12 and is upset in the flaring mouth 26 of the die by a conical punch 20 the blank being supported by the ejector rod 26. On the next stroke the socketing punch 27 is brought into line with the die and the rod 26 being permitted to retire, by the withdrawal of the gag 89 from between the lever 5 and the abutment screw 11, the blank is forced into the parallel part of the die bringing the outside diameter to size and closing the metal round the punch to finish form the socket. The punch 27 is mounted on a bridge 38 on the blank 18 and is supported by a sleeve 28 reduced to pass through the plate 15 and enter the mouth of the die. On the return stroke of the punch slide a cam 32 acting on the stem 34 forces the sleeve 28 forward over the punch and strips the work should this adhere to the punch. The lever 5 is pivoted at 6 and operated by a rod 7 having a sliding guide at 8. A cam 40 secured on the hub of the flywheel 3, engages a roller 44 on an arm of a rockshaft 42 having a second arm 45 pivoted in a fork 46 adjustably connected to an end 47 having engagement at 48 with the end of a lever 49 on a rockshaft having a second arm 52, engaging a slide 55 mounted by slots and squared pins 57 on the back of the lever 5. The cam has two dwells connected by a rise and a fall to support the slide with the gag in the position shown in Fig. 1 during the stroke of the first punch and in the position shown in Fig. 4 during the stroke of the second punch. A spring 61 maintains the roller 44 in contact with the cam but may be secured to hold the mechanism inoperative during ordinary heading. As applied to making socketed screws with cheese heads the die is in two parts 70, 71. Fig. 8, the part 71 sliding on the part 70 under the control of a backing-up sleeve 72 surrounding the ejector rod 82. In the first stroke the punch 73, Fig. 11, upsets the blank in the coned part 85 of the die and forms a conical socket a stripper sleeve 74 seating in the mouth of the die under pressure of a con'rol spring 75. On the second stroke the socket forming punch carried by a bridge 38 and fitted with an ejector sleeve as in the first form forces the head through the parallel part of the die as shown in Fig. 11 both the pin 81 and the sleeve 72 having been retracted to permit this. The sleeve 72 has a slotted end to admit the lever 5 to control the ejector pin and is itself controlled bv a sliding cam 94 operated by a lever 87 pivoted at 89 and linked at 86 to the arm 53 that operates the gag slide 59.
