Abstract

558,829. Parachute flares. SCHERMULY, C. D., SCHERMULY, A. J., and SCHERMULY, C. Sept. 1, 1942, No. 12299. [Class 9 (ii)] A multiple flare comprises two or more flare candles 6a, 7a packed in a millboard or like tube 1 with their associated parachutes 8, and separated by a wooden disc or discs 9. A primer cap 3, fired as the flare is dropped from an aircraft, ignites a delay fuze 4 which explodes a burster charge 5 and expels the candles and parachutes from the tube. Fuze cords 6, 7 leading respectively to the candles 6a, 7a are ignited, by the charge 5, and light the candles simultaneously or successively according to the lengths of the fuze cords. The candles and parachutes may be packed side by side. instead of end to end. Packing 10 may be provided around the candles.
