Abstract

556,951. Films &c. ; moulding plastic materials. MOSS, W. H. April 25, 1942, No. 5568. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group V] A solution of an acetone-soluble film-forming polymer in a volatile solvent is applied to a smooth casting-surface formed by a non-elastic film-forming polymer which is a derivative of a polymerized diene and is insoluble in the solvent of the applied solution ; at least the bulk of the volatile solvent is evaporated, and the resulting sheet is stripped. The polymerized diene derivative may be chlorinated rubber, rubber hydrochloride, hydrogenated rubber, cyclorubber, or similar derivatives of polymerized isoprene, butadiene, or dimethyl butadiene. Chlorinated isoprene and omega-polychloroprene may be employed. Film-forming polymers which may be used as a basis for the sheets include cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, aceto-nitrate, and aceto-stearate, acetonesoluble cellulose ethers, polyvinyl acetate, and polymethyl methacrylate. Thick sheets may be obtained by casting one or more layers of the solution. The casting surface may be supported on a sheet of glass or metal. Thus a layer or layers of a solution of chlorinated rubber in ethylene dichloride or benzene may be deposited on a glass or metal plate, fitted with removable side walls. In an example, a large number of layers of a cellulose acetate solution are cast successively one on top of another, the.bottom layer being cast on a chlorinated rubber surface supported by a glass plate. The composite sheet is stripped from the chlorinated rubber. Instead of depositing the first layer of cellulose acetate dope directly on the chlorinated rubber surface, a preformed sheet of cellulose acetate may be laid flat on the chlorinated rubber surface and this sheet may be built up to the required thickness by the deposition of successive layers of cellulose acetate dope. The composite sheet including the first layer, which is formed, is stripped from the chlorinated rubber surface. The dopes may contain plasticizers, high boiling solvents, dyes, pigments, metallic powders. Sheets suitable for observation panels of aircraft, windshields, or windows for vehicles may be made. The process may be modified by dipping a plate of chlorinated rubber or the like, or a glass plate or other support coated on both sides with chlorinated rubber, into the film dope, e.g. a solution of cellulose acetate. The coating of cellulose acetate is dried and further coatings are formed by alternate dipping and drying steps. The composite sheets so formed are then stripped from the two chlorinated rubber surfaces. Specifications 533,788, 542,080 and 551,786 are referred to.
