Abstract

[Class 92 (ii)] A machine for charging preformed cartridge belts of the kind shown in Fig. 4, comprises in combination (a) an endless conveyer 2 having portions 5A with flutes or like locating means for the clips 9 on the belt and plain portions 5B to accommodate the end belt parts or tags 10, 11, 12, (b) timed means to deliver cartridges into alignment with the clips in the flutes and to prevent the feed of cartridges to the plain portions, and (c) means to insert the cartridges into the clips. The invention is shown applied to a machine of the general construction shown and described in Specification 539,184 the cartridges being fed to shoots 45 by the means described in Specification 539,365. The shoots feed different types of cartridge to each of four drums 42 only two of which are shown. The drums have different numbers of recesses 43 to provide a prearranged sequence and spacing of the cartridges in the clips of the belt. The conveyer is driven by an electric motor 15 through a belt 17 driving a counter-shaft which not only drives the drums 42 but rotates a timing switch in the form of a disc 49 with contact pin 50 which breaks the circuit through the motor once for each complete cycle of movement of the conveyer thereby stopping the conveyer in the position shown to permit of placing the tag portion of a fresh belt in position. The three-phase motor 15 is provided with a starter enclosed in casing 63 and controlled by a handle 64. The timing-disc 49 has cam surfaces operating members 53, 55, 56 to move shutters 58 into the shoots 45 to prevent the feed of cartridges to the plain portions of the conveyer.
