The shield may have a convex front 14 and straight or convex sides, and it may consist of a single or composite plate of aluminium or like metal or alloy, with or without an under or intermediate layer of rubber or like resilient material, or a pair of plates 13 b may be connected by springs 20. The shield may be suspended from the fuselage 11 and/or the wings 12 by rigid rods 15 and/or springs 16, and it may have openings 22 for observation purposes or to accommodate the landing wheels, and such openings may be fitted with doors or shutters. The shield may have a chamber to carry bombs or other releasable missiles, and it may be arranged horizontally or with a slight inclination so as to assist in supporting the aircraft.
