Abstract
555,276. Drilling diamonds. LONDON ELECTRIC WIRE CO., and SMITHS, Ltd., and ASHTON, A. B. Feb. 12, 1942, No. 1891. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A diamond drilling-machine has electromagnetic means for imparting the axial reciprocating movement to the spindle with means for grinding the needle during periods in which the movement is inoperative. The diamond holder a is carried by the core b of a solenoid e magnetized by A.C. and co-operating with a permanent magnet g or an electromagnet of fixed polarity. A spring f of non-magnetic material supports the core. A grinding-wheel i is mounted on a slide j advanced by a weight or spring k to the grinding position but held in an inoperative position by a solenoid m when the solenoid e is operative. The solenoids may be controlled automatically by a series of contacts in a rotating drum.
