Abstract

554,926. Galvanic batteries. MULLARD, S. R., and HAYES, C. F. M. Jan. 16, 1942, No. 647. [Class 53] A dry battery having flat electrodes comprises a number of trays for containing the electrode, depolarizer, and electrolyte elements, opposite side walls of the trays being mutually inclined so that they may be nested under pressure to effect contact between the battery elements. As shown, the trays 10, which are moulded from thermo-plastic synthetic resin, are open at the top and bottom and are formed with base flanges 11 on which are placed carbon-coated zinc plates 17, the plates being held by pressing them on to the heated flanges so that the material flows to form retaining beadings 20 above the edges of the plates. The electrolyte elements 21, which may consist of a layer of paste or a coated or saturated wafer constructed as described in Specification 476,554, are then inserted, on top of which are placed tablets 22 of depolarized mixture. The cells are then nested, a shallow tray 23 carrying an electrode unit is placed at the top, and the assemblage is compressed to effect contact between the elements. The trays may be sealed together by softening them at the edges, but preferably the assemblage is covered by a sealing skin 27, which may be of the kind described in Specification 423,165. As shown, the lower portions of the walls of the trays are inclined at a greater angle than the upper, so forming expansion spaces 26. In a modified form, the walls have a single inclination, but do not fit closely, so that expansion spaces sealed at the top by the skin 27 are formed between them. When the trays are not thermo-plastic, the electrode units 17 may be moulded into them, or may be held by a sealing fluid or cement, or retained by flanges sealed to the walls of the tray. Instead of being moulded, the trays may be formed from a strip, Fig. 7, of paper or other sheet material, which is bent and joined at the ends and may be coated or impregnated with sealing material. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 549,036.
