Abstract

542,601. Gas-blast switches. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Nov. 22, 1940, No. 16790. Convention date, Nov. 1, 1939. [Class 38 (v)] In a gas-blast switch having a tubular contact 3 movable downwardly mechanically and a nozzle contact 4 movable upwardly against spring-action 8 by the pressure-gas, the movement of the contact 4 is prevented until adequate blast-pressure is built up in the insulating casing 2. The contact 4 is formed with a piston 5 movable in a cylinder 6 into which the gas, when admitted at D for opening the switch, passes by way of pipe 15 and passage 14 in the piston 12 of a maximum-pressure relay, and as the space 19 below the piston 5 is open to atmosphere through pipe 18, annular pistonspace 17, and port 21, the piston 5 is initially held down on the base of cylinder 5. When adequate pressure is built up, piston 12 rises, covering the pipe 18 and connecting pipe 15 to port 21, so that contact 4 moves quickly upwards and held there until the switching is completed and the pressure cut off. The Specification refers also to switches having a break with a pneumatically-actuated contact in series with an isolating-break.
