Abstract

540,836. Winding webs. HEATH, A. R. N., and TAPP, T. C. April 30, 1940, No. 7789. [Class 100 (i)] Winding or unwinding apparatus, particularly for use in apparatus for electroplating narrow metal strips, comprises a pair of spaced parallel horizontal shafts each provided with a number of flanged pulleys connected by slack endless belts which support the coils during winding or unwinding. In one form, Fig. 1, the uncoiling apparatus comprises spaced shafts 4 provided with a number of flanged rollers 5, opposite pairs of which are connected by slack belts 7 forming supports for narrow rolls which are inserted between the flanges 6 of the rollers. After passing through an electrolysis bath B or other treating apparatus, the strips are rewound by an apparatus similar to the uncoiling apparatus but provided with means, e.g. a motor 11 and chain drive, for positively driving the roll supporting belts. In a modification of the uncoiling apparatus, the rolls are supported on spaced flanged rollers 18, Fig. 5, and the strips pass over guide rollers 21, 20 carried by members 19 which, in addition to the flanges 17 of the rollers 18 serve to prevent lateral displacement of the strips.
