[Class 83 (iii)] A vertical attachment for a horizontal spindle milling machine comprises a back plate 10 secured to the machine and having an integral sleeve 16 forming a socket to receive a spigot 26 on a gear housing 24 carrying the milling spindle 48, the socket being split and provided with lugs 18, 20 bored to receive bolts 28 for securing the housing to the plate. A bevel gear 34 is mounted in the spigot on roller bearings 36 with a thrust bearing at 38 and is keyed at 44 to an arbor 40 which replaces the usual tool-carrying arbor. The hollow spindle 48 is journaled in the housing on coaxial bearings 52 and is driven by a bevel gear 56 engaging the gear 34. A draw-bolt 60 having a hexagon head 64 is threaded at 62 into a cutterholding socket 63, a collar on the draw-bolt being located between a shoulder on the spindle and a split gland nut 69 so that the tool socket may be positively drawn into or ejected from the spindle. The upper spindle bearing is adjusted by a nut 72 and a felt washer is located in a groove in a member 78 to exclude dirt &c. The lower bearing is similarly protected. The outer side of the gear housing is closed by a plate 82 having an extension 80 which may be braced by the overarm. Angular setting of the spindle is facilitated by a circular scale on the part 84 of the housing coacting with a reference mark on the sleeve 16. The lugs 13, 14 of the back plate may have pairs of holes 22 for adapting the attachment to different machines.
