Abstract

547,129. Making leather, BURCHILL, J., CALLAGHAN, A. S., HUNNAM, R. E., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 7, 1941, No. 1648. [Class 76] Pelts are tanned, without previous pickling, by treatment with a liquor containing a chrome tanning agent in conjunction with a watersoluble salt of a dicarboxylic saturated aliphatic acid containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms in the proportion of mols of salt to mols of Cr 2 O 3 within the range of 1:4 to 1:1 and preferably in the proportion of 1:2. Sodium adipate is particularly suitable ; other salts are succinates, glutanates, pimelates or suberates. The potassium or ammonium salts are also suitable. The employment of adipic acid salts is described in a number of examples.
