Abstract

533,037. Mechanically recorded optically reproduced sound records. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Aug. 8, 1939, No. 22922. Convention date, Aug. 10, 1938. [Class 40 (ii)] A mechanically cut sound record for optical reproduction comprises at least two cutting layers, the upper layer 24, Fig. 3, having good cutting properties and a thickness of less than 30 microns, and the lower layer 23 having substantially worse cutting properties, a superficial blackening 25 being formed on the upper layer by chemical agency either before or after the cutting operation. By good cutting properties is meant the production of a sharp edge where the material is cut. The upper layer may be of gelatine and the lower layer of a cellulose derivative. The blackening may be obtained as described in Specification 483,898, for example by the addition of lead acetate to the gelatine upper layer, which is then treated with ammonium sulphide to produce a black surface layer of lead sulphide. A combined sound and picture film is made on a photo-sensitive commercial film as follows. The picture is exposed while the sound track is not. The film is developed and fixed, leaving a clear sound track. This clear sound track is then blackened and cut.
