[Class 78 (iv)] In a refuse-collecting vehicle in which a dustbin or like container is carried by a wheeled support raised in vertical guides on the vehicle by means of endless chains driven from the vehicle engine, and inverted for discharge at the top of the lift, the wheeled support carries hooks engaging the dustbin and the two axles run in different guides, one of which is diverted from the vertical at the upper end to cause tipping. In the illustrated form, the wheeled support is raised and lowered by endless chains 18, Fig. 2, passing round the upper and lower sprockets 19 and driven from the power shaft 23. The upper wheels 1 travel in the guides 16 which curve inwardly towards the vehicle at their upper ends, while the lower wheels 2 travel in the guides 15 which remain vertical throughout their entire length. The wheels are carried by a member 5 having a pivoted member 7 connected thereto, the latter including a sliding member 8 carrying a depending hook 13. A strap 10 on the member 5 limits forward pivotal movement of the member 7 while a rearward projection 11 on the member 8 normally engages a fixed member 12 on the vehicle frame and supports the member 8 in raised position. When the rim of a dustbin is lodged on the hook 14 on the member 7 it pulls the latter forward to the limits of the strap 10. A rearward push applied by the handle of the bin then swings the member 7 backwards until the member 11 is disengaged from the stop 12. The member 8 then falls by gravity until the hook 13 engages the handle of the bin. On operating the chains the bin is raised and tipped automatically into the vehicle body. During the tipping movement teeth 6, 9 on the member 5, 8 engage and prevent relative sliding movement between them which might release the bin from the hooks. On the return of the bin the member 12 automatically reengages the projection 11 and lifts the hook 13 clear of the bin. A spring pin 28 cushions the final downward movement. The apparatus may be used on a sealed vehicle in which the dustbin opens a lid or trap during the emptying process.
