Abstract

532,184. Making valves. BRITISH AERO COMPONENTS, Ltd., CARPENTER, E., and BROOKES, H. H. Aug. 19, 1939, No. 23960. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Welding.-Poppet valves for internal combustion engines of the kind having a cavity for cooling medium closed by a welded cap have the cap projection-welded to the head at all points simultaneously. The cooling medium may thus be prevented from leaking and may be placed in the valve before the cap is welded thereon. The surface a<SP>1</SP> of the cap α is formed with an annular flange d for locating it in the head b and with an annular rib c through which it is electrically welded to the head by insertion between electrodes f, e. Pressure on the electrode f may be relieved during welding so as to increase the welding temperature and allow the metal of the rib to flow, whereupon the pressure .may be again increased to complete the weld. One or each of the opposing faces may be formed with one or more annular ribs.
