530,028. Extracting lithium ; lithium hydroxide ; lithium salts. BOLIDENS GRUVAKTIEBOLAG. June 14, 1939, Nos. 17428, 17429, 17430 and 17431. Convention dates, June 22, 1938, Dec. 6, 1938, Dec. 6, 1938, and Dec. 6, 1938. [Class 1 (iii)] Lithium is extraced from minerals containing it, by lixiviation with aqueous solutions of neutral metal salts. Specified starting minerals are lepidolite, spodumene and petalite, and specified neutral metal salts are those of sodium, potassium and the alkaline earth metals, such as sodium sulphate, nitrate or chloride. The minerals are preferably disintegrated, by heating to 700-1200‹C., prior to lixiviation, and the latter process is generally performed at 100-300‹C., and at super-atmospheric pressure. A better yield is obtained by adding to the lixiviating solution a small quantity of an alkali, such as sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate or lime. The process is preferably performed in such a manner that entering rich mineral is caused to meet lixiviating liquid which already contains some lithium, while escaping poor mineral meets entering liquid which is free from lithium. When a neutral sulphate is used, the solution containing lithium sulphate may be treated with an alkaline hydroxide, cooled to about 0‹C. to crystallize the alkali meta; sulphate so formed. filtered, and the liquor evaporated to obtain pure lithium. hydroxide.
