Abstract

539,976. Spindle arrangements for spinning frames. TRIGGS, W. W. (Saco-Lowell Shops). Jan. 26, 1940, No. 1639. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 2, 1940.] [Class 120 (ii)] A spindle arrangement for a spinning frame comprises a dead spindle having spaced bearings for supporting a driving sleeve and a base which supports the spindle and provides a fulcrum for the spindle while permitting universal swinging movement thereof but preventing radial movement of the spindle at the fulcrum ; damping means are provided adjacent the lower end of the spindle to damp the swinging movement non-elastically to enable the sleeve during operation to find a stable position of rotation. As shown the spindle 2 is pressed into the upper part of a non-rotatable bolster 3 supported in a base 4 secured to the spindle rail. The sleeve 8 is supported on the spindle by upper and lower sets of ball bearings 9, 10 and a bobbin, frictionally held on the sleeve, is supported by a whorl 12 thereon. The lower end of the bolster is supported on a shoulder 20 in the base 4 with a clearance between the bolster and the wall of the base so that the lower end of the bolster can move with comparative freedom on the shoulder 20 and lubricant introduced into the base through a hole 18 lubricates the shoulder and the lubricated surfaces provide the non-elastic damping action which allows the spindle to adjust itself automatically to the position necessary for smooth running. The bearings may be lubricated by oil introduced into the bore of an internally grooved cap 13, any surplus oil being caught in a stationary cap 14 and escaping through a hole 17 to the hole 18. The cup 14 fits over the extension 15 of the base and has its rim taking into an annular recess 16 in the whorl. The lower end of the bolster may be disposed in an oil well so that the spindle will be additionally damped and cushioned by the oil film between the outer peripheral surface at the bottom of the bolster and the inner peripheral surface of the spindle base. A weight may be mounted on the upper end of the cap 13 to improve the running at high speeds and in another form the bolster is short and has a flange resting on the extension 15 of the base so that the bolster and spindle are carried by the extension in which the bolster has a clearance while the end of the spindle extends with clearance into an oil well at the foot of the base 4 ; the sleeve is a tapered tube fitting over and secured to an upward extension of the whorl.
