539,966. Packing glands. DAVTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., (formerly, AIRCRAFT COMPONENTS, Ltd.), and BINGHAM, A. E. June 22, 1]940, No. 10773. [Class 122 (v)] A packing gland comprises resilient material confined between a plunger and a high pressure cylinder, and in axial compression between two confining surfaces, of which that remote from the cylinder is of less area than that subjected to the pressure in the cylinder, so as to induce in the resilient packing a pressure greater than that in the cylinder, and thereby prevent leakage from the cylinder. In the form shown, a packing ring 8, made of synthetic rubber or other deformable but substantially non- compressible material, is located between a brass backing ring 7 and a steel pressure ring 6 from which parallel spaced pegs 9 project through apertures in the ring 8 and enter apertures 10 in the ring 7. A spacer ring 11 is provided between the ring 7 and a closure plug 4 threaded into the cylinder 2, whilst a plurality of layers of fine gauze or other foraminated material 15, a spiral ring, or a radial ribbed formation, may be provided between the rings 6, 8 through which entrapped liquid can return to the cylinder 2. The edges of the ring 8 adjacent the ring 7 may be chamfered off and protected by brass rings 12. In one modification, the spaced pegs are replaced by a continuous flange on the ring 6. In another, the rings 7, 11 are dispensed with and the spaced pegs or the continuous flange are accommodated in the inner face of a closure plug which is secured in the cylinder by means of dowels or cotters.
