Abstract

539,933. Respirators. FOUNTAIN, Ltd., G. R. SNELL, A. E. C., and HOULGATE, H. J. Jan. 15, 1940, No. 884. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIX] Respirators are provided with an acoustic diaphragm for transmitting speech mounted in the wall of the respirator and having an acoustic duct-leading thereto from a position immediately in front of the user's mouth, the outlet breathing valve being separate from the diaphragm. In the respirator shown an acoustic assembly is provided comprising a diaphragm 52, Fig. 2 secured between perforated discs 47, 55 by means of a flanged ring 59 of rubber &c. and a flanged bush 58. This assemblage is mounted on a spindle 20 which secures together throat members 33, 43, and a die casting 12 fitted in the fabric of the mask and carrying an extension 11 on which the purifying canister is mounted. The members 33, 43 are formed with openings 40, 44 to allow sound to pass freely to the diaphragm and the member 33 has a flange 35 on which is mounted a mouth piece 30 of rubber &c. shaped to fit over the user's mouth. The outlet valve which is normally fitted in the position opposite the user's mouth is, in the present construction, mounted in an aperture at the side of the respirator usually arranged for a microphone. The valve, Fig. 3, comprises a ribbed rubber disc 15 closing against a seating 26 carried by the internal boss 25 of a conical member 23. Specifications 445,988 and 464,458 are referred to.
