Abstract
538,937. Closures for bottles ; aerating. SUSSMANN, M. April 30, 1940, No. 7716. [Class 125 (iii)] A combined closure and relief valve for use in the introduction of carbonic acid gas into liquids, has a hollow stopper body 10 adapted to screw into the bottle neck, and a mushroom form valve member 14 by means of which the gas is admitted when the valve of the gas container is opened. The gas passes through the central bore 13 and the radial bores 23, then passes the rubber sleeve 25 which forms a non-return valve. The head 14 is seated on a rubber diaphragm 15 which itself rests on a shoulder 16 in the closure body 10. The central hole in the diaphragm 15 is rather larger than the stem of the mushroom valve 14, and close to this hole the diaphragm rests on a spring-pressed sleeve 32 with a number of relief holes 33 arranged opposite holes 34 in the body 10. An annular channel 17 on the under side of the head 14 is connected by passages 17a to the gas supply channels. The stoppered bottle is inverted while gas is supplied and forced past the valve 25 while the pressure is communicated to the channel 17. Normally this pressure is balanced by the pressures of the atmosphere and spring 31 on the underside of the diaphragm. When the gas pressure in the bottle exceeds this valve the centre of the diaphragm is moved away from the head 14 to connect the space 17 to the atmosphere. The stem of the valve 14 may be provided with an extension to lead the gas to the bottom of the container in order to avoid the container.
