Abstract
538,815. Loading and unloading cartridge belts. McEWAN, J. W. March 21, 1940, No. 5289. [Class 92 (ii)] A tool for use in inserting cartridges in machine gun belts comprises a frame plate with fixed spaced racks holding the cartridges and a manually-operated slidable pressure member for engaging the bases of the cartridges supported in the racks. The tool is adapted for removing a cartridge from the belt the pressure member then engaging the bullet end of the cartridge. In the form shown, a combination tool for pressing the base ends of the cartridges into belt links 2 for loading is, by reversal of a belt placed on the opposite face of the tool, used to press the bullet end of a cartridge from the belt for disintegrating the belt. The frame plate h of the tool has fixed thereto rack members a, b and d, e for supporting the cartridges and links and slidably supports pusher members n, m operated by scissor grips s through rollers r engaging cam surfaces fast with the pushers. As shown, the tool is set for pushing home by member n a number of hand-inserted cartridges supported by the rack teeth b e. By reversing the belt and supporting it on the rack teeth a, d which also support the belt links, the pusher m is operated to engage the bullet end of a single cartridge to divide the belt at any desired point.
